Hodgkiss Farm was the second of four farms in the center of Jamestown (aka Conanicut) Island to be permanently protected from development. Formerly known as the Dutra Farm or South Farm, it was renamed after Gertrude May Watson Hodgkiss and her husband Commander George Kingman Hodgkiss. Their daughter, the late Elizabeth Libby H. Beaumont was a founding member of the local land trust and was instrumental in preserving not only this farm, but other island properties as well.

The farm is currently owned and operated by the Chases and Beaumonts with vegetable production supplemented by field acreage and greenhouses in Portsmouth (Aquidneck Island) where irrigation water is more readily available. USDA Certified Organic herb and vegetable transplants are grown by us at our other farm. The majority of our products are Newport County island grown within fifteen miles using a minimum of manmade additives. Expanded hay production is helping feed our pet animals and the Belted Galloway (Oreo Cookie) grass-fed beef cattle to our east at Windmist Farm. To our northeast, most visible from the Newport Bridge, is the Wanton Farm (Dutra Farm), a Rhody Fresh Cooperative dairy operation with black and white Holstein cows bred for milking.

While we appreciate your patronage; please limit your visit to the farm stand area; this is our home and a working farm with free range animals and large equipment. Next door (to our north left out the gate) you can visit our neighbors at Watson Farm owned by Historic New England and open to the public for walking tours and events Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays 1-5 PM through October 15th.
